Understanding our clients businesses

WHY WE ARE ALL LOOKING AT THE PORN INDUSTRY

Have you heard about Magic Leap? A 2010 startup that raised $1.4 Billion from investors like Google and Ali Baba?

In 2018 the company will release it’s long awaited virtual retina glasses that superimpose 3D computer-generated imagery over real world objects. Get a first feel here. The company has recently partnered up with the NBA to bring virtual basketball to the masses and this may well be the start of something really big.

At Indiandribble we were wondering how we could put this technology into action to activate brands for our clients. The truth is… in the last fifty years only one industry has spent millions and millions on new technologies that have led to major changes in the communication business… the porn industry. We like to support what we say with some decent research so let me take you through a short timeline of the innovations that were fueled by porn moguls.

THE TRUTH IS, IN THE LAST FIFTY YEARS ONLY ONE INDUSTRY HAS SPENT MILLIONS AND MILLIONS ON NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT HAVE LED TO MAJOR CHANGES ... THE PORN INDUSTRY.

8mm camera
In 1958 a young photographer invented the term Glamour Home Movies, he filmed women undressing with an 8mm cam. The porn industry was born and so was the home movie.

Videorecorders
In the seventies the VCR became the ultimate solution for not having to leave the house and potentially be spotted in that sleazy xxx cinema to watch sexy movies. The porn video market decided to support only the VHS format and pushed betacam out of business!

TV Cable
The Manhattan Public Access Cable channel saw it’s subscribers quadruple once sexually oriented content was put on one of the numerous channels cable had on offer.

Broadband internet
The porn industry basically invented bandwidth growth. At one point Penthouse began distributing 2400-baud modems to its readers for free so they could have faster access to the company’s xxx bulletin boards.

Video streaming
The dutch porn company “The Red Light District” started the first streaming video in 1994, that is one year before CNN and 11 years before Youtube. Talking about an early adopter.

Online payments
Creditcard payments were introduced for the first time in 1998 when the infamous Pamela & Tommy Lee sextape was made available online.

Haptic technology
Now that video and streaming is available to everybody, the porn industry is working on haptic and olfactory technologies to enhance their experience. Interestingly enough it is their research that is said to be at the cradle of haptic technology at Apple and Samsung. They are currently using it for teledildonics… remote controlled sex toys that a porn star can control for you.

Virtual Reality
On Christmas day 2016 the views of virtual reality porn spiked at 900,000, – it seems a lot of VR headset presents were unpacked and used right away! Pornhub – the biggest portal site on the internet delivered 91,9 billion online videos for 23 billion visits that year and already has an average of 500,000 VR video viewers daily.

SO WHAT'S YOUR GUESS?

How will Pornhub and other players exploit the magic leap glasses, and how can our activation agency make “prudish” use of their creativity? Can you imagine the next festival activation is an empty booth that turns into a bustling jungle bar once you arrive? Festive dinners where you can change the table setting from medieval to uber-chic in nanoseconds? Watching the Formula 1 screeching by your seat at less than a meter, without a thick concrete wall? Or watching Justin Timberlake serenading you in a karaoke bar like setting ?

Share your thoughts, we’re curious to hear from you.
